Some of the stages of the cognitive development in children according to the study of Piaget are:
Cognitive Development Procedure during 0-24 Months
0-2 Months
Simple spontaneous stage of activities like grasping and sucking
2-4 Months
Stage of Primary Circular Reactions. In this, the child responds with stereotyped activities like opening and closing of the fingers.
4-8 Months
This stage is known as Secondary Circular Reactions while period of 8-12 months is synchronization of Secondary Reactions as per Piaget. The period of 12-18 months is called Tertiary Circular reactions as starts exploring new places for new goals.
18-24 Months
In this period, the child likes to discover new things, which means that an internal representational system has been now developed in the child. The children before actually responding to solve a problem will actually signify it.
Cognitive Development Process during 2-7 years – Pre-operational Period
This period is then divided into two phases – Pre-operational phase and Intuitive phase
Pre-operational phase of 2-4 years
In this phase, a child would like to prefer to be more verbal to symbolize a thought but is mostly self centred with using words like me, my and mine. He can think of an object, though it is not through language.
Intuitive phase of 4-7 years
This phase makes the child more social in approach rather than self-centric. Child tends to see only one side of an object rather than object as a whole. Which is why the absence of the decision is still there but perception dominates his reply.
Cognitive Development Process During 7-12 Years – Period of Concrete Operations
Studies reveal that a child‘s brain is fully developed up to a level where he can think in an organized manner. He can now sort subjects more categorically rather than building a perception about it.
